Here at Wheat City Comics we are always looking for new stories and talent to be involved with our projects. Currently we are looking for horror/fantasy based stories for GRINDER approx. 8 to 10 pages in length, but we can be flexible and allow more or less pages if the story warrants it.

What you can expect

Todays comic marketplace is very competitive since the crash in the 90's.
Grinder and the other upcoming titles released by W.C.C. will serve as a place where unkown artists can have thier work showcased.
Generally any payment for submissions will be small. A fee of $50 U.S. upfront then a  25 to 50 cent royalty per issue sold will be paid to the artist/artists for the right of W.C.C. to print the finished work. The Artists still keep copyright ownership of their work (unless we write the story and commission the art) and have the right to have it reprinted in any other publication.
( If we write and letter a story and you pencil and ink it for us, that will give you the .25 cent royalty payment. If you write, pencil and ink and letter a complete story and we accept it for Grinder, then you can expect the .50 cent royalty deal.)

How the business end will work
There are overhead costs that must be met before royalty from profits are paid out. For example if you have a completed story in GRINDER you can expect the $50 upfront flat fee right away. Here comes the business end of things. The comic will need some marketing and that costs some money. Marketing is what will get the comic title known and hopefully compel interested readers to purchase it. On top of this is the prep costs of getting the stories ready for the printers and for formatting into a pdf. format for digital download sales and website prep etc.

Here's a breakdown example:
You as a collabrating artist will receive $50 or $100 depending on size of story upfront for your troubles.
We will need to recover these costs before we get into making a profit.
$50 fee for cover art
$500 allotted for marketing (this is low but it is a start)
$500 allotted for comic editing and prep, web ready download file and website services.
Thats about $1050 that we must recoup before we are collecting a profit on sales of the comic. Once this expense is recouped then thats where the royalties per comic are going to be paid out for your hard work. If you are collecting a .25 cent or .50 cent royalty per issue after the overhead is paid, you will get this from every comic sold through Comixpress plus every digital version of the comic sold as well.

So if 2500 copies are sold, after the overhead is met, of both physical and digital comics you can expect to receive .25 or .50 cents per issue sold (depending on what your deal is). That would mean you would be receiving a payment of $1250 (.50 cent royalty deal) U.S. for your 10 page black and white story, plus the exposure to the market.

As well as a general rule we will pay about $10 per page ( penciled and inked) of commissioned work plus a royalty to a chosen artist to be published in Grinder or any other of our upcoming Titles.
In short this is a good place to get your work out there and be seen with the hope of a good return on your short story or art.
All of our comics are printed and marketed through Comixpress. All digital versions will be sold directly off of this website.

Commissioned works

We are always looking for artists to help create our stories.
For those artists who can pencil and ink their work and wish to have their talent showcased, we can help.
We will only pay about $10 U.S. per page penciled and inked plus a .25 cent royalty per issue sold after costs. Sometimes we will commission a small 2 or three page strip to be done and we will pay a flat $100 rate for this work with no royalty deal. However this is a good opportunity to have your work seen. Hopefully as our publications become more popular, we may be able to increase the pay.

These guidelines are absolute and royalties and payment will not be negotiated. If you don't agree with these guidelines, then you should not submit anything to us.
Thank-you.

You can send us a link to a website that has samples of your work on it to: Click here to e-mail

Please do not send us huge files in the e-mail as we will not look at it and delete it.

Technical stuff

All of our comics are published in a traditional comic size.
Trim: 6.625x10.25”
Live Area: 6x9”
Margins: Top: .5”, Bottom: .75”, Sides: .3125”
Bleed: 6.875x10.5”

All files should be in the TIFF (.tif) format or the Jpeg (,jpg) format.
Files should be 300 dpi for both full color files (such as covers), as well as Grayscale and black & white files (inside front and back covers, interior black and white pages, etc).

DPI stands for “dots per inch” and can be adjusted in Photoshop under:

Image > Image Size > in the Resolution box at the popup window’s bottom.

This would be used to reduce a higher DPI file and should not be used to increase a lower resolution file as this will result in a blurry image when printed.

You can change the color mode of your file under:

Image > Mode > and select either Grayscale or CMYK color as needed.
